GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt opened the 2012 SAE World Congress in Detroit on April 24, 2012.

As one of the Innovation Exhibitors at the Congress, MRC embraced the opportunity to showcase Multi-fire technology to the automotive and aerospace engineers attending.

First impressions of your “peers” is a critical part of peer-review, and the attending engineers from around the World were impressed by Multi-fire technology and the opportunity to learn about MRC’s development team.

And whilst there were exhibitors at the Congress relying on computer animations of their proposed engine designs, MRC’s revolutionary engine design stood out as MRC showcased running engines.

Showcasing running engines also provided the opportunity for attending engineers to observe, understand and discuss the performance of MRC’s innovation; and further discuss the many suitable applications for MRC’s high-torque “energy-efficient” engines.

The upcoming public release of MRC’s field testing milestones (scheduled for June 2012) will also represent another opportunity for the attending engineers (and supporters of MRC) to learn more about our company’s technology, and to see exciting footage of MRC innovation in action.

Other impressions at the Congress concerned global trends and their relationship to depleting natural resources. MRC’s focus on high torque “efficient-engines” for the largest classes of vehicles along with our focus on the emerging Natural Gas Vehicle market also resonated as the right “R & D” for the environmental challenges facing the global freight transport sector.

Jeffrey Immelt, during his opening address discussed GE’s similar vision:- “Natural Gas vehicles have an important role. I still think its more applicable in the big-fleet truck applications, but we’re working both on fueling, infrastructure as well as in fleet investment”.

Followers of MRC would know that since 2009 we have been anticipating a greater rollout of NGV infrastructure and Multi-fire technology is set to provide opportunities for this cleaner and domestically abundant fuel to power the U.S. freight and fleet vehicles.

MRC’s focus on high torque diesel engines also resonated with the World’s engineers. In particular, our tailoring of R & D for the shipping sector was recognized as an acknowledgement that diesel engines will dominate the international shipping sector for decades to come.

With a number of other exhibits planned in the coming 12 months, we look forward to the opportunity to continue to showcase Multi-fire technology across the United States and around the World. For those of you that can’t make any of the exhibits, check out our Facebook page.

With marine product trials well advanced, MRC is looking forward to the opportunity to showcase its technology at the SAE International 2012 World Congress & Exhibition.

Rallying the support of the World’s engineers begins with peer review- and there is no better place to continue MRC’s peer review activities then at the SAE’s annual World Congress. The World Congress for Automotive engineers (and also increasingly IT engineers as well) has in recent years been solely about showcasing the top Innovators in the World for that year. Such a forum, perfect for the World’s engineers, and ideally suited to MRC, will see our technology along side other innovators’ products for the first time. And it is the success of our marine product trials that we expect will help position MRC ahead of the pack.

In a sense, by always prioritizing engineering considerations over the past 4 years, MRC is now well positioned to reveal its engineering achievements to an important key audience- the World’s engineers. We always said we would get the science right first- now its time to showcase the benefits of such an approach– not only to promote our own product, but to inspire other innovators to stay the course with their own research endeavors.

The MRC team will be there including myself, and I invite all shareholders and supporters to come along- not just to see MRC technology but also to be able to compare us to competitors who are also showcasing their products. Whilst the Congress is about product promotion, it is also an opportunity to meet and spend time with our shareholders and supporters. So I hope to see you there. Michael

Like all corporations, MRC constantly reviews the management and maintenance of its intellectual property portfolio. Since its inception, MRC has always placed a high premium on secrecy so that our engineers were afforded the time to develop their research and move methodically towards the manufacture of production-ready engines capable of being demonstrated in applications.

Thankfully, this strategy has not only been successful, but now as we begin 2012 and start to plan public demonstrations (calculated to augment the confidential demonstrations which remain ongoing), an opportunity exists to file an all-encompassing provisional patent to protect the engineering milestones realized over the past four years of development.

This week, a broader provisional patent application was filed to protect the “opposed piston multi-fire engine”- an application that extends protection beyond earlier prototypes to include compression ignition and other versions of the technology. Once confirmation of our “priority-date” is received, we will begin to plan 2012 public demonstrations and in particular, select which international trade shows are suitable to showcase our technology.

In a sense, by consolidating all of the various versions of multi-fire technology into one provisional application, a “pioneering patent” can now be developed by our IP attorneys throughout 2012/2013. Not only did secrecy allow space and time for our technology’s development, but it can now translate into commercial advantages associated with more broadly drafted claims.

IP strategy however goes beyond the global PCT patent system. Just as important is to ensure that consumers here in the United States (and in MRC’s other key markets) ultimately know when the technology they are looking at is MRC’s technology.

The filing of a trademark application this week seeking to protect the term “multi-fire technology” in the category of combustion engines represents part of our strategy to educate the U.S. consumer so that they know when they are dealing with MRC’s technology. After all, now that President Obama has moved to enforce a fleet-wide average of 54.5 MPG in coming years, securing a strong IP portfolio in the field of internal combustion engines will prove even more crucial.

As MRC’s innovation division continues its development with trials of turbo multi-fire engines, I personally have no doubt that the extraordinary “power-to-weight” advantage associated with MRC’s technology will revolutionize the marine market.

Introduction of a new paradigm is of course challenging, but in the marine sector, size and weight is everything. MRC turbo multi-fire engines have already delivered more power whilst reducing the overall size and weight. But our engineers are not the kind to rest on laurels, and for this reason, I anticipate robust field testing will yield further development.

Like many involved in this project from its inception, I have been mindful that the goal set by MRC to halve the size and weight of internal-combustion engines would always have a significant impact on the global engine market. As I look at the turbo multi-fire engines, it is clear MRC’s innovation team have now gone beyond this goal- and the likely impact may well be greater than any of us could have conceived. 2012 is set to be a watershed year for MRC.

I have attached photographs to this blog that I took which compare a Mercruiser engine with an MRC turbo multi-fire prototype (external shots only). It will seem no doubt inconceivable to our competitors that the MRC turbo engine can deliver the same power as the larger and heavier Mercruiser. The fact it can propel the same marine craft will certainly give them pause. As you can see on the photograph at the top of this blog, the engine bay has room for two men once the Mercruiser was replaced by an MRC turbo multi-fire engine.

In the end though, when it comes to ongoing innovation, MRC has always been its own competition and we will continue to advance our innovation and work towards our planned market insertion strategies regardless.

One of the key roles for MRC’s strategic operations division is to identify opportunities and target specific markets.

We expend considerable time examining sectors of the economy such as marine and military. The formation of our subsidiary MRCglobal in Hong Kong is one example of how MRC took early and definitive steps to “position” our corporation.

But as an engineering business, we also look at trends within sectors such as the growth potential for smaller engines across the global economy. By expending resources and time to understand the markets we seek to dominate, our product development itself has and will continue to benefit.

And this is no more evident then in the decision of MRC’s Innovation Center to test “multi-fire” technology within the 750cc category. This category of engine size is a market characterized by enormous growth potential; and MRC’s decision to “position” itself as the World leader in terms of torque output in this category is typical of our approach to move early and decisively when we anticipate an opportunity may exist. And the results… well they speak for themselves.

MRC’s 750cc laboratory tested engines have been able to consistently deliver torque in the range of 290 ft-lb to 308 ft-lb (rpm range between 850 to 1100). Mechanical engineers and engine enthusiasts alike know that such a result is unheard of in this category of engine size running on gasoline. In 2012, our engineers will turn to compression ignition for this category with standard gains expected.

And as MRC’s Innovation Center incorporates these smaller engines into their overall field testing program, the possibilities given the laboratory performance of these engines will continue to impact on MRC’s strategic business initiatives.

Michael.

Since the 1980s, incremental advances in vehicle engine performance has often been the result of better engine management systems.

Notwithstanding the performance gains from the use of these computers, one significant disadvantage associated with technology of this kind was that it effectively ended the great American tradition of the Shadetree Mechanic- or at least shifted their focus to “classic” vehicles. In short, the technology was not accessible.

For technology to truly dominate the market, it must be accessible to the ordinary customer. Perhaps the most celebrated example in recent times is the success enjoyed by Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. When they both visited Xerox in the 1970s (evidently Xerox were not as obsessed with Non-disclosure agreements as MRC), they were shown the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Both recognized that this made computers “accessible” to everybody- until then people had to write computer code to use computers. But the GUI enabled anybody to look at a computer screen and interact with the computer without learning computer code. This of course lead to the massive adoption of computers for business and personal use.

At MRC, our ongoing field testing of “multi-fire” technology is not simply about performance gains. We strive for universality, utility and simplicity in design- elements that when combined are more likely to lead to an inevitability of technology adoption.

Of course engine management systems have their place for incremental gains, but if every Shadetree Mechanic can fundamentally grasp “multi-fire” technology, then the adoption of our technology (not to mention its utility in remote locations) will swell.

Michael.

Scientific method underscores the approach of all divisions at MRC.

Take for example the overarching objective of MRC- namely, to create unprecedented demand in key markets for our technology. Naturally scientific method is employed to create products incorporating our technology. This is the business of our Innovation Division (easily stated I know– but reliant on 30 years of research in the field of engine design if your wondering why we succeed where others have failed).

But what about MRC’s business solutions? Market demand (and particularly “unprecedented” demand) may depend on divergent strategies depending on the particular “market” we target. The solution is to again rely on scientific method.

There is no one scientific method, but there are common features in the way scientists and engineers do their work. There is observation, predictions, experimentation and the drawing of conclusions. At MRC, if you view this portal (and the main MRC site), through the prism of “scientific method“, all MRC’s strategies and initiatives can be explained.

Take for example the four divergent strategies employed by MRC at present: (1) China/India initiative; (2) All Power Marine; (3) Special purpose defense contractor; and (4) U.S. trucking initiative.

The China/India initiative started with the incorporation of MRC Global Limited in Hong Kong in 2011. Incorporation of this subsidiary is about market proximity for India and ensuring easy contractual arrangements with Chinese State Owned Corporations as well. It is also designed to ameliorate adverse currency trading of the U.S. dollar. In other words, observation, predictions and now in 2011, testing of those observations and predictions explains this initiative by MRC.

Likewise, All Power Marine is about product performance in a sector dominated by a small number of players. You could probably name the main OEMs involved in outboard and inboard production. Where few participants exist, barriers to the market are high, and require a strategy dominated by (i) superior branding; and (ii) performance differentiation of product. You must excel at both if you are to enter this market and dominate. This is what All Power Marine is designed to deliver.

Military contracts are different again. It is not about branding, but more about tailored solutions for the various U.S. defense agencies and other defense agencies around the World. In this market, “relationships” built over many years and understanding how to integrate innovation with defense’s own ongoing research is paramount. We have started planning a corporate vehicle to deliver these relationships and to integrate development (in some cases likely to be confidential development) of MRC’s innovation with that of the various defense agencies own Research Laboratories.

Finally, take MRC’s U.S. trucking initiative. The market is obviously extensive. The Federal and State Transport and EPA regulatory requirements- just as extensive. For this reason, this is a market ideal for “collaboration” with existing OEMs. The field testing of MRC’s technology in progressively heavier classes of Trucks is all part of this planned “collaboration”.

All four strategies are predicated on values and principles espoused by scientific method.

Last week, via the MRC website, one of the questions I received was from Peter (surname withheld). Peter was essentially asking about MRC “promotion” activities.

MRC, as an engineering firm, coordinates media releases and other market updates around its “engineering milestones”. In effect, we are a firm that wants to be recognized for an unwavering commitment to “getting the science right first”. It is why you wont see on this blog “computer modeling” of technology under development at our laboratory, or even detailed diagrams of future inventions (spend 5 minutes with Steven and you soon realize his mind is always on the future).

Instead, on this blog and MRC’s main site, you will see working engines and details about their performance- both in a laboratory testing cell situation and also in actual applications. Reproducing laboratory performance of our engines in field testing has been what 2011 is all about for our engineering team. Its been fascinating work and will be the subject of a documentary in due course.

In summary, to answer the question, MRC is in the business of producing the most efficient internal combustion engines in the World, and we expect the market to judge us on this basis. So engineering milestones will dictate how and when we update the market.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email me via the: strategic operations division.
